Endless Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is a MUST! Its super affordable, all natural and can be used a TON of different ways!
I did a post previously on Manuka Honey that had tons of benefits and turns out Coconut Oil is a great all in one as well! Its an anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and improves nutrient absorption as well! It can be used for cooking, as a lip balm, moisturizer, shaving cream, Deep treatment conditioner, makeup remover, body scrub (mixed with sugar makes a great exfoliant),bug bites, athletes foot and canker sores. Its also been proven to boost metabolism and aid in digestion. For moms it has tons of helpful benefits as well. You can use it as a nipple cream, diaper salve, and for cradle cap (to name a few)! I mean the list goes on and on! I highly recommend picking some of this goodness up ;)

  3. Totally agree! I keep a jar in the kitchen to cook with and a jar in the bathroom to use as a body/ face moisturizer, hair mask and skin protectant before i put my daughters diaper on.

On a side note, my daughter had a bad diaper rash for a week and nothing would clear it up so i tried manuka honey figuring it wouldnt hurt and it cleared overnight. Powerful stuff!

  6. Love coconut oil too! I tried it as cooking oil but wasn't too fond of the taste in food. However, love it in my smoothies and in my hair. I love using coconut oil (but prefer argan oil) around my eyes and eyebrows - it's made my eyelashes soft and longer and has filled in my brows after a horrible wax experience. BTW, are you using cloth diapers for Ava or traditional disposal ones? I seem to be seeing everyone talk about cloth diapers.

    2. I'm not the orig poster, but I actually apply it on dry hair (like an oil treatment) and then wash it off. :)

    3. Hi Andee,

Just caught your reply. I apply it on dry hair and leave it on overnight. Coconut oil is great to moisturize your hair. However, if you want thick hair (in addition to shiny moisturized hair from using coconut oil) you need to mix it with other oils. I make a mix of coconut, olive and a tiny bit of castor oil. It's the castor oil that causes hair growth, the other oils are just going to strengthen and moisturize. Add these oils and heat in the microwave for 20-30 sec and then apply. For an added boost, apply Phyto's Scalp Stimulator on your scalp first. BTW - you may need to shampoo twice. Hope that helps!! Take care!

    1. I was wondering about that too! i read you can use it in place of any oil or shortening but i would assume it has a coconut taste so I'm sure you wouldn't want to use it with your pasta dishes etc... Im going to search pinterest and see what recipes i can find for it!

    2. I always use it to stir fry my chicken - When you first start using it you can slightly taste the coconut but after a while you get used to the taste and don't notice any difference!

I also heat it slightly and use it on my hair as a conditioning treatment. After applying it to my damp hair I wrap my hair in a towel and leave it in for a few hours. I then give my hair 2/3 shampoos and follow with my normal conditioner..... My hair feels and looks so nice after - highly recommended!

    3. I cook with it all the time. I use it in smoothies, stir-fry, oil for pan frying, Warm salad dressings, and more. I believe (Someone correct me if I'm wrong) That it can also be used in the place of Shortening, Butter, and margarine in recipes. I do very little baking, and love real butter taste, so I haven't experimented with it in baking other than greasing the pan.

There is a type of coconut oil that is filtered more and has less of the Coco flavor if you wish. But as what was said earlier, after using it, you will get used to it before the first jar is gone. I love the flavor it gives veggies ans seafood.

  16. I have a jar at home, but instead of a white oil ( how it was when I got it from the store) is now a clear oil. Is it okay to use it? I think the hot weather change it :(

    1. It is fine to use. It has a very low melting point. I prefer mine in a more solid white form so I put it in the fridge for 15 mins to harden it but the instant it hits your fingers it melts.

  17. On a racier topic. Coconut oil is the perfect personal lubricant. I am post hysterectomy & it has saved my marriage.
We use it for my lack of response, sensual masssage & I use it for my skin & hair ( a different jar, of course). We have also found it in capsule form for my hubby (professional weight lifter) to take after work outs ~ perfect muscle fuel & I've added a capsule with my daily vitamin for immune system benes. We heart the white goo. B

  18. Years ago, a friend from India told me there are different grades of coconut oil. She told me to go to an Indian grocery and buy the best grade of coconut cooking oil in a bottle which apparently is like extra virgin olive oil. It had a much milder scent. I applied that before my final shower rinse and didn't smell so smokey as I did when I used the "white" stuff.
Lately, I have been using store brand cheap "lighter flavor" olive oil since I couldn't get to an Indian market, and it works OK. Isn't it interesting we are rediscovering oils people used in Bibical times?

    2. You can also order it off of Amazon. I prefer to get my coconut oil from Swansonsvitamins - you can order it online. I buy their store brand. Walmart has Louana coconut oil - which is cheaper, not organic, but very good for cooking with. I use it with my pancakes - gives them a crisp edge, I also use it with cooking my eggs. The Louana brand does not have the coconut flavor; so I use it for all the daily stuff where I use to use shortening, etc. I use the nicer coconut oils for other things - like putting a tablespoon in my coffee in the morning. You can use it in place of any vegetable oil or shortening - and it is actually healthier than any of the those. One noted benefit from using it in my coffee regularly is my skin is softer. There are also studies that indicate that coconut oil is beneficial for alzheimer's and for autism and ADHD. Lots of good things with coconut oil!

  23. I love it too as long as its used externally please don't ingest it. It is 65% saturated fat which is bad for your heart.

    1. Coconut oil is GOOD for you. The fat in them is the same as the fat in breast milk.

The primary saturated fat in coconut oil is lauric acid (47%). It is only 3% stearic acid. Stearic acid is actually converted into oleic acid in the body, so it is healthful and does not affect (or maybe even lowers) LDL. Lauric acid raises both HDL and LDL, but raises HDL more. That is why coconut oil is considered a “healthy” fat.

  27. When ingesting it for health Reasons do you just mix it in a drink or just like take a tablespoon like taking cough syrup?? Sorry I'm new at this! Lol

  28. Anon - I haven't tried it on my scalp - haven't had that problem.

Sydni - I mix it in my coffee, or a smoothie. Melt it and dribble it in while you're mixing it up. Some have taken it by the tablespoon. I did that once, didn't care for it. I also use it to fry my eggs, pancakes, etc. For more info read at lifewithoutsweets blogspot :) (It is NOT my site... I just love reading it.)

  29. I'm in my 50's and I actually put some under each of my eyes before applying a light foundation to my face. The extra moisture of the oil absorbs some of the foundation, leaving it looking dewy instead of crepey.....works very well!

  30. I suggest two books by Dr. Bruce Fife..."The Coconut Oil Miracle" and "Coconut Lovers Cookbook". The recipes call for coconut oil, coconut milk or coconut water. Two of my favorites so far are...Ambrosia with Creamy Coconut Dressing, Sesame Chicken Salad with Sesame Seed Dressing.

I might add that a friend of mine who's mom was diagnosed with Altzheimer's earlier this year, said she's made a 180 degree turn after the doctors said to put two spoons of coconut oil in her oatmeal every morning. That's what got me looking more closely at coconut oil.

  31. I too am a huge fan of the stuff. You have to try different brands for the right flavor profile for you. I love it for making popcorn, the smell, the flavor, it is amazing. And I keep a little jar by my bed for chapped lips....good stuff!

  32. I saw this posted on Pinterest and am very interested in learning more.....I definitely need it to lose weight, My 14 y/o has thyroid issues as well as weight issues, digestive issues, skin issues, immune system issues......and her list goes on and on....after 12 years of me telling the dr something was wrong with her, I found one that tested her and diagnosed her with Gluten intolerance this helped some in the beginning, but has not "fixed" her issues........I was in the local Kroger store and saw 2 types of Raw Organic Coconut oil, Refined and unrefined, I was wondering what the difference is and which is better........

  35. irgin (unrefined) coconut oil tastes and smells coconutty and is great for cooking and baking where you want that flavor. You can use it for anything but it will impart a coconut taste (mild) and odor (pleasant in my book)! Unrefined coconut oil retains the most nutritional value and is superior to refined oil.
Expeller pressed (refined) coconut oil can be used for anything. It does not have a coconutty smell or taste. It is still outstanding to use but does lose some of it’s health properties during the refining process.
Food grade should always be used.
